Assessing Novel Approaches in the Treatment of Beta Thalassemia

Program Description

Beta thalassemia is a group of blood disorders that occur due to genetic mutations affecting erythropoiesis. Patients with beta thalassemia can present with varying severity of anemia and may require lifelong blood transfusions along with iron chelation therapy to manage complications. If left untreated or if patients do not adhere to the frequency of transfusions, patients may become at risk for several serious complications, including organ damage, and increased financial burden. Pharmacists involved in the care of patients with beta thalassemia must consider these factors affecting patient outcomes, psychosocial burden associated with frequency of therapies, and the economic considerations for both patients and the healthcare system. This article will examine strategies for managed care professionals to support coordination of care for patients with beta thalassemia and the potential role of emerging disease-modifying therapies in the treatment paradigm.
