Assessing Effective Treatment Options for Bladder Cancer: Examining Current and Emerging Therapies

Program Description

Urothelial cancer has the highest lifetime treatment cost of all types of cancers, with estimates suggesting that overall costs in 2020 were $5 billion. In addition to staging and type of bladder cancer, patient-specific factors are especially important to consider when determining treatment. Initial treatments include platinum-containing chemotherapy, with treatment options expanding due to the approval of checkpoint inhibitors. Recent advancements have been made for patients requiring second or subsequent lines of therapy such as antibody-drug conjugates, as well as investigational agents and combination therapies. Pharmacists must be aware of treatment-related adverse effects associated with all of these therapies, as well as the economic burden for patients in managing these adverse effects, and should understand the importance of avoiding increasing healthcare costs with additional emergency department visits or other treatment-related costs. As currently available therapies including chemotherapeutic and targeted systemic therapies often require different types of management, this activity will examine the important role of pharmacists and managed care professionals when assessing therapies and potential sequencing options for patients with bladder cancer to achieve optimal outcomes and increase progression-free survival.

⦁ Examine the efficacy and safety data of new and emerging treatments as well as investigational combination therapies for locally advanced/mUC.
⦁ Identify the economic burden of bladder cancer, cost-effectiveness of current and emerging treatment options, and their impact on patient management and quality of life.
