Program Description

While chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) often progresses slowly, it can transform into a more aggressive form and makes the disease much harder to treat. The current therapeutic landscape for CML includes use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) but these agents are associated with the development of resistance and toxicities that impact treatment adherence. Overcoming discontinuation rates, ensuring medication adherence, and resolving considerations for treatment selection for frontline TKI therapy must all be considered when managing therapies for patients with CML. Managed care pharmacists are ideally positioned to optimize patient outcomes by addressing these challenges through formulary management and treatment sequencing protocols, providing medication therapy management services, and using their expertise to ensure quality and cost-effective care is provided to patients. This activity will focus on data presented at the 2024 ASH Annual Meeting for the use of TKIs in patients with CML, with particular attention to the real-world implications of TKIs and guideline-directed treatment of CML.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Examine the therapeutic landscape of available and emerging tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapies in managing chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), considering long-term safety and tolerability.
  • Analyze recent clinical updates presented at the 2024 ASH Annual Meeting on novel and emerging pharmacotherapeutic approaches utilizing TKIs for the treatment of CML.
  • Apply the managed care considerations to appropriately assess and integrate new data to optimize the use of TKIs in the treatment of patients with CML.

This activity is supported by an educational grant from Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.
