Senior care pharmacists in long-term care (LTC) settings routinely translate guideline recommendations into day-to-day care. That work can mean protecting a uniquely vulnerable population from infectious disease or recognizing the long-term consequences of medications. In keeping with the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists’ 2026 Annual Meeting and Exhibition’s focus on building an age-friendly tomorrow, this year’s PTCE sessionswill explore the role of LTC pharmacists in COVID-19 prevention and tardive dyskinesia (TD) management. LTC residents remain at heightened risk of severe COVID-19, yet vaccination and postexposure prophylaxis uptake remain inconsistent. Similarly, despite established screening guidelines and available VMAT2 inhibitor therapies, TD often goes unrecognized and undertreated. In both areas, LTC and senior care pharmacists are well positioned to identify at-risk residents early; weigh the evolving therapy landscape against the complexities of an older, medically complex population; and collaborate with prescribers and care teams to translate guidance into consistent, appropriate care. The sessions will review the latest evidence in the therapeutic landscape, strategies for identifying and protecting at-risk residents, and guideline-based screening, along with pharmacist-led strategies for interdisciplinary management. These sessions give senior care pharmacists practical tools to translate current guidance into consistent care and improve screening, prevention, and treatment for older adults in LTC settings. Check out the agenda to learn more about each session.
