Applying Evidence-Based Strategies and Novel Pharmacotherapy in HRS-AKI Management: A Comprehensive Approach for Health-System Pharmacists

Program Description
Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) is a rapidly progressive severe form of acute kidney injury (AKI) occurring in patients with advanced liver disease, including cirrhosis, hepatitis C, or metastatic liver disease. Early identification of HRS-AKI is important to ensure timely initiation of treatment to potentially reverse disease progression and improve patient outcomes. Treatment protocols have centered around vasoconstrictors, and clinical data for their use in HRS-AKI will be reviewed. Pharmacists should be familiar with emerging evidence-based treatment recommendations on HRS-AKI and steps to optimize management of patients, including initiating medication discontinuations when necessary, administering appropriate pharmacologic agents for the reversal or prevention of HRS-AKI, and ensuring optimal transitions of care. This program will prepare pharmacists for the selection of appropriate agents for managing HRS-AKI and equip them with information to educate patients and clinicians about evolving treatment protocols to improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden of HRS-AKI.
