This activity was originally presented at the 2022 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exposition.
Program Description
Ovarian cancer is often termed a “silent killer” due to asymptomatic tumor growth, delayed symptom onset, and inadequate screening among women leading to advanced stage disease at presentation. While most women with advanced-stage epithelial ovarian cancer will have good response to initial systemic therapy, many will experience a recurrence of their disease and require additional treatment. Multiple studies have shown that poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors prolong survival in women receiving therapy in the maintenance and recurrent ovarian cancer settings without a substantial increase in adverse effects (AEs). However, their oral administration presents unique challenges in the management of toxicity and adherence monitoring. Pharmacists practicing in oncology clinics and health-system settings are central providers of comprehensive education to patients to explain nuances of therapy with PARP inhibitors, including how these medications work, administration techniques, which AEs to expect, available strategies to avoid AEs, and what potential drug-drug interactions may occur. Expert faculty will discuss patient cases and examine strategies to overcome potential barriers impacting treatment decisions, access to therapy, and medication adherence for patients with ovarian cancer receiving PARP inhibitors.
