Program Description

Gastrointestinal (GI) upset and disorder can occur for many reasons. Once factors contributing to a patient’s GI symptoms have been identified, pharmacy technicians can play a key role in helping patients navigate numerous over-the-counter products available. Having an awareness of important medication dose and adverse effect information is essential for the pharmacy technician to support the pharmacist in providing care to patients. This activity will review common conditions of the GI tract and the nonprescription products patients often seek for symptom relief.

• List the most common OTC products to help manage short-term GI symptoms
• Recognize opportunities for referral of patients to pharmacists for proper counseling about GI health
