Program Description

Overactive bladder (OAB) is a chronic disease that affects the quality of life of about 16.5% of the US population due to urinary incontinence or frequent need to urinate. Managed care professionals and pharmacists have important roles in providing education about OAB and adherence to treatment, as well as ensuring patient access to therapies. Current guidelines recommend combination treatment with behavioral therapy along with a pharmacologic agent such as the antimuscarinic and beta-3 adrenergic agonist classes, which work to control motility of contents in the bladder. Managed care professionals must weigh the risks and benefits for each agent to individualize treatments and assign costs based on dosages, dose adjustments, comorbidities, and adverse effect profiles while considering impact on the patient’s quality of life. The panelists will discuss therapy options managed care professionals need to be aware of to remove access barriers and improve health outcomes in patients with OAB. A patient perspective interview ingrained throughout the program will highlight the challenges a patient with OAB experiences and the role of managed care professionals in supporting patient management.
