AJMC® Powered by Patients and Managed Care Insights – More Than a Cosmetic Disease: Vitiligo Treatment Approaches and Raising Awareness of the Disease Burden

Program Description
Vitiligo presents in patients as physical change in skin coloration and is thought to have an underlying autoimmune pathology. The significant alteration in skin appearance may leave patients with psychological and social burden as well as depression and social anxiety that affects relationships and quality of life. Current recommendations for patients who choose to treat vitiligo include phototherapy, topicals such as corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors, and the recently approved ruxolitinib cream. New disease targets have been identified that have led to the development and investigation of several novel drugs. As more is understood about the mechanisms of the underlying pathology of this condition, it is necessary that managed care professionals are equipped to develop coverage policies for vitiligo treatments. This program will review the challenges in the treatment of vitiligo, disease presentation and progression, and cost-effectiveness of current recommended treatments. A patient interview accompanying this program will provide additional insight on potential challenges, experience with treatment, and the involvement of pharmacists on their care team.

• Distinguish the efficacy and safety of common treatment options for vitiligo, including newly approved and emerging agents.
• Explore strategies to optimize treatment pathways for patients with vitiligo based on their clinical characteristics and medication profiles.
