Advancing Targeted Therapies Aimed at Smoldering Disease in Multiple Sclerosis

Program Description

The chronic neurological deterioration in multiple sclerosis (MS) can continue throughout the disease course in some patients. Termed smoldering MS, this type of disease activity is characterized by slowly growing lesions that progress independently of relapse activity. Pharmacists and clinicians must evaluate existing treatment strategies and recommendations regarding clinical management of MS based on the smoldering subtype. This session will review the Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ACTRIMS) expert consensus on smoldering disease and the rationale for high-efficacy therapies available for MS, including other emerging targeted treatments and disease-modifying agents for the smoldering subtype. Managed care pharmacists play an integral role in assessing the economic burden of disease and evaluating medication-related costs. They will be able to contribute to developing policies for effective care pathways, facilitate appropriate access to treatment, and drive the ultimate therapeutic decision for patients with MS.

• Illustrate the managed care considerations in MS management with the paradigm shift toward early high-efficacy treatment.
