Program Description
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs, leading to chronic respiratory infections and impaired digestion. Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators improve CFTR protein function, while airway clearance therapies, inhaled mucolytics, and pancreatic enzyme replacement help manage symptoms and enhance quality of life. However, many patients face barriers to accessing CFTR modulators, struggle with adherence to complex medication regimens, or require alternative options due to rare mutations or drug resistance. This activity will provide insights into CF disease burden, advancements in CFTR modulators and emerging therapies, and patient-centered strategies to improve treatment access and adherence. Specialty and managed care pharmacists will navigate considerations for treatment selection to enhance clinical outcomes and quality of life for individuals with CF. Included will be patient cases and faculty perspectives on the role of pharmacists in CF care, covering aspects such as patient education, individualized therapy selection, and approaches to resolving treatment and management challenges.
