Program Description
The expanding treatment landscape for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) encompasses targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and combination regimens. Treatment options following disease progression during or after immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy are limited and continue to be a challenge in the management of metastatic RCC, but clinical trials have demonstrated that combination regimens of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) with ICIs lead to improved overall survival and response rates in patients with metastatic RCC. Oncology pharmacists must be familiar with disease-specific factors and individual patient risk status as well as the safety and efficacy data of emerging combination ICI/TKI regimens when selecting an initial treatment. Other considerations, including treatment sequencing and awareness of severe immune-related adverse events with the use of ICI/TKI combination regimens and the oncology pharmacist’s role in ensuring patient safety will be addressed. This program will discuss essential roles of oncology pharmacists in the care of patients with metastatic RCC, such as ensuring access to available and emerging ICI/TKI combination regimens, implementing guideline recommendations, and managing toxicities.
