Program Description

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a complex disorder of immune dysregulation in which B cells and plasma cells produce autoantibodies that bind platelets and platelet-producing megakaryocytes leading to their degradation or impairment. In patients with ITP, the number of platelets is significantly reduced, causing an increased likelihood of bleeding and decreased quality of life. ITP can be primary (occurs in isolation) or secondary (in association with other disorders). Secondary causes include autoimmune diseases such as anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome, viral infections, and certain drugs. Pharmacists can be integral to the treatment and management of therapies for patients with ITP and should be familiar with current guideline recommendations and emerging therapies to optimize therapy in this patient population. This activity will review current strategies for the selection of appropriate ITP therapy to improve clinical decision-making among the health care team. The podcast discussion will focus on individualized treatment plans, the importance of laboratory monitoring and adherence, and the pharmacist’s role in facilitating continuity of care to improve health-related quality of life for patients with ITP.
