Advances in the Management of Prurigo Nodularis: Updates for the Specialty Pharmacist

Program Description

Prurigo nodularis (PN) is an inflammatory skin condition that most commonly affects adults aged between 40 to 69 years. It causes a chronic rash and severe sensations of itchiness that triggers patients to frequently scratch. Complications can occur when scratching at the nodules results in lesions becoming infected. Without treatment, the lesions and itching may be present for months or years, leading to reduced quality of life for patients. As there is no currently FDA-approved treatment for PN, pharmacists must be familiar with considerations for the use of high-potency topical steroids. Emerging evidence for investigational agents as well as nonpharmacologic and behavioral modification efforts to prevent scratching will be presented for pharmacists to provide education to patients about PN management. This activity will review clinical safety and efficacy data of topical medications and intralesional therapies that are currently under investigation for treatment and management of PN.

• Explore the overall goals of therapy and the limitations associated with currently used therapies
• Examine the evolving treatment paradigm for the management of PN, including clinical data, mechanisms of action, administration, dosing, and potential adverse effects
• Identify the role of the pharmacist as clinician, patient advocate, and patient educator in the treatment and management of PN
