This activity was originally broadcast in conjunction with the 2023 ASHP Midyear conference.
At the end of December 2023, targeted-release budesonide (Tarpeyo) was granted full FDA approval.
Program Description
Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is a type of glomerulonephritis that occurs when IgA deposits accumulate in the kidneys, leading to inflammation, renal damage, and, in some cases, progression to end-stage renal disease. As data for targeted therapies in clinical trials continue to emerge, pharmacists will be tasked with incorporating novel and recently approved therapies into existing treatment pathways and ensuring patient access to new treatments. Given their accessibility to patients across care settings, pharmacists can contribute to the early identification of risk factors and symptoms of IgAN to facilitate accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment initiation. This program will review the role of the pharmacist on the multidisciplinary care team in the management of patients with IgAN through the use of evidence-based treatments, recommendations for administration and monitoring, and counseling on recently available therapies. Considerations for medication adherence and education to mitigate drug interactions with recently approved therapies in IgAN will also be discussed.
