Program Description
The mortality rate from prostate cancer is declining due in large part to earlier diagnosis and improved treatments. However, despite initial response to androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), castration-resistant prostate cancer inevitably develops, in which the tumor progresses despite low circulating levels of androgens or inhibition of the androgen receptor signaling pathway. Pharmacists must be prepared to address and manage the long-term effects associated with ADT, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and bone health, which can negatively impact quality of life. Disease progression and treatment-related adverse effects have necessitated ongoing research into immunotherapy and targeted therapies for prostate cancer. In addition to a review of clinical data for emerging targeted therapies, this activity will examine overall resource utilization and cost-effectiveness data of treatments under investigation for prostate cancer. Strategies for managed care professionals and pharmacists to address barriers to treatment access in the management of prostate cancer will also be presented.
