Program Description
Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) due to narcolepsy is a chronic neurological condition resulting from a dysregulated sleep-wake cycle. EDS is characterized by an inability to maintain wakefulness and alertness during waking hours, and episodes of sleep occurring unintentionally or at inappropriate times. EDS is a serious condition that requires lifelong treatment and management of contributing factors. With the recent advancements in medicine, the American Academy of Sleep Disorders updated treatment guidelines based on improved efficacy, mechanism of action, and convenient dosing schedules. This article will highlight the challenges pharmacists face when identifying and treating EDS and address the importance of educating patients on medication safety and adherence.
