Program Description
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) refers to a heterogeneous group of hematologic malignancies characterized by abnormal bone marrow, blood cell morphology, and peripheral blood cytopenias resulting in abnormal blood development. Treatment of high-risk MDS is currently limited compared with other hematologic malignancies, with patients experiencing increased likelihood of relapse or progression to acute myeloid leukemia. Evidence-based recommendations for treatment sequencing exist, but patient-specific factors, including age, comorbidities, renal function, depth of cytopenias, and presence of cytogenetic abnormalities, can influence treatment selection. In addition to treatment challenges, pharmacists must understand barriers influencing patient access, financial considerations, and health care resource utilization in the treatment and management of high-risk MDS. This webinar will review clinical data for emerging agents incorporating molecularly targeted approaches with a focus of evidence presented at the 2022 American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting. The potential impact of recently presented data on current clinical practice guidelines will be reviewed to assist managed care professionals in navigating cost-effective treatment for patients with high-risk MDS.
