Program Description
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare, life-threatening thrombotic microangiopathy, requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment. The majority of TTP cases are acquired, resulting from a deficiency in ADAMTS13. The historic treatment has consisted of corticosteroids and plasma exchange, with newer therapies including immunosuppression and agents that modify the interaction between von Willebrand factor and platelets. This activity will review the pathophysiology and diagnosis of TTP, with a focus on available treatments. Additionally, the role of the pharmacist in managing this patient population will be emphasized, with a review of counseling pearls and adherence strategies.
