Program Description
Long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders (LC-FAODs) are rare, life-threatening, genetic disorders characterized by acute crises of energy production and chronic energy deficiency. These defects in energy production can lead to serious metabolic complications including hypoglycemia and recurrent rhabdomyolysis resulting in frequent hospitalizations and premature death. The management of patients with LC-FAODs is multifactorial and requires comprehensive counseling about appropriate diet and lifestyle precautions often involving the support of a dietician. Until recently, there were no FDA-approved therapies for patients with LC-FAODs. This activity will focus on current treatment options and provide specialty and managed care pharmacists with a better understanding of the management of these rare disorders and their impact on the lives of patients and caregivers through a patient interview.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Analyze the pathophysiology and clinical presentation associated with the most common long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders (LC-FAODs) including significant disease-related complications and impact on patient quality of life
  • Explain the limitations of current standards of care for managing LC-FAODs and the role of triheptanoin in treatment including safety and efficacy data
  • Explore the role of specialty pharmacists and managed care providers in improving patient access to triheptanoin and their impact in improving patient outcomes
