Advancements in Targeted Therapies for HR+/HER2-Negative Metastatic Breast Cancer: Exploring AKT, PI3K, and Oral SERDs

Program Description

Treatment of metastatic breast cancer, particularly hormone receptor-positive/HER2-negative (HR+/HER2−) disease, is complicated by rapid disease progression. Activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway contributes to resistance to hormonal treatment or therapies targeting HER2 receptors, which has led to the development of drugs including AKT and PI3K inhibitors as well as the oral selective estrogen receptor downregulators (SERDs). Despite the potential of these agents, challenges such as dose-limiting toxicities and the development of resistance have limited their clinical efficacy. As new targeted therapies emerge that target this pathway, oncology pharmacists must understand their mechanism of action and how they fit into treatment plans for patients with HR+/HER2− breast cancer. This program will explore the pharmacology of novel agents and provide participants with clinical pearls for dispensing and appropriate use. Expert faculty will discuss challenges oncology pharmacists may encounter and strategies to navigate the complexities of patient selection, adverse effect management, and the interpretation of clinical trial results to optimize patient outcomes.
