Program Description
SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, has posed a significant burden to the world and especially the United States, causing over 365,000 national deaths as of early January 2021, with numbers continuing to rise daily. To prevent further morbidity and mortality, the world is working rapidly to develop vaccines in an effort to prevent the spread of infection, with countless vaccines currently in various phases of trials. With some of the much-anticipated vaccines now authorized for use, pharmacists are positioned to increase immunization rates as patient educators and immunizers. However, vaccinating all of the United States presents many challenges including logistical factors of distribution and storage, following priority groups for allocation, and addressing barriers to vaccination. It is critical that pharmacists understand the efficacy and safety data of the vaccines as well as essential information such as the appropriate administration and storage because they will have an important role in disseminating accurate information to patients and facilitating access to the vaccine. This activity offers pharmacists the most up-to-date information about the emerging vaccines so they may address any fears or skepticism that patients may have to work toward herd immunity.

• Identify the burden of COVID-19, clinical presentation, the barriers to receiving vaccination as well as the reasons for vaccine hesitancy
• Examine the emerging COVID-19 vaccines and the efficacy and safety of each vaccine that is available or currently in late-stage clinical trials in the United States
• Investigate the pivotal role of the pharmacist in educating patients to overcome vaccine hesitancy
• Explain the techniques of proper vaccine administration
