Program Description
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss in patients aged 65 years and older, and it is expected to account for 288 million cases worldwide in 2040. The goal of treatment is to slow disease progression and prevent severe visual impairment or blindness. Prevention and early detection of AMD have become central to successful patient-focused care and improved visual outcomes. Choice of an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agent should be based on a discussion between a patient and physician and account for patient preferences and experienced clinical challenges. New agents are emerging to address treatment burden and existing limitations of current therapies by improving the durability of treatment response. As this market grows with the addition of new agents, pharmacists will continue to have an active role in providing advice and treatment recommendations for patients with nAMD. This program will review various strategies that managed care and specialty pharmacists can use to evaluate and select the best treatment options for individual patients in collaboration with the health care team.
