This activity was originally broadcast in conjunction with Asembia Specialty Pharmacy Day of Education 2024.
Program Description
Generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) is an autoimmune disease characterized by autoantibodies directed against acetylcholine receptors, leading to varying levels of muscle weakness and fatigue. Symptoms can affect the eyes, throat, limbs, and respiratory muscles, leading to drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, impaired mobility, and breathing challenges. These symptoms can fluctuate, significantly impacting daily life and independence. Traditional treatment for gMG includes acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and immunoglobulin therapy for severe cases. However, there are limitations to care and unmet needs with these traditional approaches. Advances in understanding gMG have led to new therapeutic targets, resulting in multiple options in the treatment armamentarium to personalize care, induce remissions, and improve quality of life. Specialty pharmacists must be well-versed in these novel and emerging therapies to make evidence-based recommendations that can lower the treatment burden and enhance patient outcomes. This activity will incorporate a case-based analysis, allowing learners to apply their understanding of gMG, explore the available targeted therapy options, and gain insight into the role of the specialty pharmacist in reducing barriers to access and providing individualized care.
