Program Description
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common form of acute leukemia in adults and has a poor prognosis, with an overall 5-year survival rate of AML in adults of approximately 25%. Hypomethylating agents and other novel therapies including several oral oncolytics have offered alternative treatment options to poorly tolerated intense induction chemotherapy for patients older than 60 years. Despite these advances, prognosis remains poor for this patient population. New maintenance therapy regimens for some patients with AML have demonstrated clinical benefit. Managed care professionals and pharmacists should be familiar with emerging agents, especially oral therapy options, and consider their place in the AML treatment paradigm alongside updated recommendations for first-line therapies. The expert panelists will discuss additional challenges in treating older patients with AML that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and examine approaches managed care professionals can take to develop and implement clinical pathways for treatment of AML.
