Program Description
Despite recommendations for use of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), uptake among individuals at risk for HIV transmission remains low. The discrepancies in PrEP coverage and adherence also vary across patient groups with respect to gender, age, and race/ethnicity. Patients face several barriers with current antiretroviral combinations, such as pill burden with daily oral administration, but emerging long-acting injectable formulations may have the potential to reduce these challenges for patients. It is imperative that pharmacists and clinicians recognize these disparities in care to ensure access and promote adherence to PrEP therapy. Managed care providers have important roles in identifying persons most vulnerable to HIV transmission and collaborating with primary care clinicians and community pharmacists to increase initiation of PrEP in these patients. This activity will examine the impact of managed care interventions in improving cost-effectiveness and uptake of PrEP therapy in patient populations most at risk for HIV transmission as well as maximize efficacy of current and emerging agents.
