Program Description
Alzheimer disease (AD) is the sixth leading cause of death and the most common etiology for dementia. The progressive nature of AD causes a significant burden to patients, caregivers, and the public health system as just over half of patients who receive a diagnosis of AD initiate treatment and even fewer continue with therapy. Although beta-amyloid inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies have the potential to change the AD treatment landscape, a significant limitation of pharmacologic treatment is that current medications only succeed in providing temporary symptomatic relief, and there are no approved medications that alter the course of AD. Because AD is a disease more commonly diagnosed in older adults and affects cognition, pharmacists have important roles in communicating with caregivers about the patient’s existing comorbidities and medication profile to prevent drug interactions. Implementation of recently released guidelines for the diagnosis and evaluation of AD can improve multidisciplinary care and quality of life for patients with AD as well as reduce caregiver burden. This activity will detail the role of the pharmacist in collaboration with managed care professionals and clinicians to promote drug utilization strategies that can be initiated early in the treatment course of AD.

• Examine the economic burden of AD and strategies to improve outcomes among patients with AD in a managed care population
