Program Description
Recent advances have greatly improved identification of molecular markers for diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Accurate prognosis at time of diagnosis is essential as it impacts clinical decisions. Unfortunately, older patients, ones with therapy-related AML/antecedent myelodysplastic syndrome, and men typically experience worse survival outcomes. This program will focus on clinical evidence updates for therapies utilized for induction and maintenance treatment of AML and corresponding changes in clinical practice guidelines. Novel agents have been associated with unique adverse effects (AEs), warranting careful patient monitoring. Pharmacist involvement in AML treatment, therapeutic adjustments of pharmacotherapy, AE prevention approaches, and unique toxicity management strategies will be examined.
