Program Description
As wounds can quickly become infected, it is important to irrigate and clean the wound. The choice of dressing for wounds directly impacts both healing and scarring. Effective wound management can be challenging and involves a multi-disciplinary approach tailored to meet individual patient needs. This activity will enable pharmacists to understand the wound healing process, become familiar with various wound care products, identify patients at high risk of infection to properly educate them on appropriate wound care strategies, and refer patients to a medical specialist when necessary.

Educational Objectives for Pharmacists
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
 

• Identify patient populations at higher risk for developing wounds and explain the basic standard of care for wound treatment
• Examine and differentiate the dressing options available for wound care management
• Analyze the effects of stress and pain on wound healing, as well as the importance of selecting the appropriate adhesive dressing
• Express the role of the pharmacist in educating patients seen in the retail setting on proper wound treatment and appropriate specialist referral

Educational Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
 

• Define patient populations at higher risk for developing wounds and explain the basic standard of care for wound treatment
• Outline the various dressing options available for wound care management
• Review the effects of stress and pain on wound healing, as well as the importance of selecting the appropriate adhesive dressing
• Recognize the role of the pharmacy technician in proper wound management and appropriate pharmacist referral
