Acne: Burden, the Role of Ceramides and the Microbiome in Treatment and Prevention, and the Role of the Pharmacist

Program Description

Up to 50 million individuals are affected by acne vulgaris, an inflammatory dermatosis. While acne has typically been thought to be associated with hormonal factors, new research has identified that patients with acne have a ceramide deficiency contributing to skin barrier permeability. Many acne medications are associated with skin irritation and dryness, and these adverse effects may lead patients to be nonadherent to their regimens. Navigating the multitude of acne therapies can be overwhelming for patients, and pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can have an important role in assisting patients with product selection. This activity will build off information presented in Webinar 1 of this curriculum and explore evidence supporting concomitant use of moisturizers containing ceramides as an adjunct to acne treatment.

Educational Objectives

• Explore the pathophysiology, prevalence, and factors that contribute to the development of acne
• Analyze data from clinical studies exploring the benefits of ceramides and prebiotics/probiotics for treatment and prevention of acne
• Identify the role of the pharmacist as patient educator and clinician in making clinical recommendations for the treatment and prevention of acne
