Program Description

Oncology pharmacists play an important role in assisting with the complex management of therapies for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Without a known cure at this time, the goals of treatment for CLL are to improve quality of life (QOL) and prolong survival. The treatment approach for more advanced or symptomatic disease depends on prognostic and patient-specific factors. Choice of therapy for CLL can be complex, as a number of effective therapies are associated with toxicities that may decrease QOL or worsen other comorbidities. As data continue to emerge on the use of targeted options for CLL, oncology pharmacists must remain up to date on changing recommendations for the use of preferred and first-line therapies as well as subsequent therapies in CLL. This session also examines toxicity concerns of preferred treatments for CLL. Included patient case discussions will present unique considerations oncology pharmacists may encounter in clinical practice when selecting therapies for patients with CLL to ensure optimal outcomes.
