Program Description
Hemophilia treatment is lifelong and requires repeated infusions of either plasma-derived or recombinant factor VIII or IX into the bloodstream 2 or 3 times weekly, or in response to bleeding. However, gene therapy is emerging as a new paradigm in hemophilia treatment. It typically requires 1 infusion, and thus has the potential to significantly alleviate costs associated with on-demand treatment for hospitalizations or for patients receiving prophylactic treatment and reduce number of days missed from school or work. Managed care pharmacists should proactively review ongoing clinical trial data for gene therapies to be familiar with these treatment options as they enter the market to improve patient outcomes while considering healthcare resource utilization.
