Program Description
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurobehavioral condition that, while often diagnosed in childhood, persists into adulthood for about half of children and adolescents. In addition to positive behavioral modification interventions, medication options for children aged at least 6 years are available. Stimulant medications have been used as first-line pharmacologic treatment options. Although these medications are highly effective in reducing ADHD symptoms, they are associated with high abuse potential. Newer, nonstimulant treatments for ADHD with novel mechanisms of action and drug delivery systems are emerging. Clinical efficacy and safety data for both stimulant and nonstimulant ADHD therapies will be reviewed. Prior to treatment initiation and during the course of therapy, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can be involved in providing disease and therapy education to patients and their caregivers, assessing medication adherence, and helping to manage adverse effect profiles of available agents. This program features counseling video vignettes highlighting approaches for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to address potential adherence barriers and prepare caregivers and patients with ADHD to initiate treatment.
