2023 New Drug and Vaccine Approvals (Pharmacy Technician Credit)

Program Description

The United States Food and Drug Administration approves a wide range of new drugs, vaccines, and biological products each year. Some of these have never been used in clinical practice before. Through their expertise on these newly approved medications and vaccines, pharmacists play a crucial role on the health care team. With knowledge of key mechanisms of action and potential adverse effects on newly approved medications, pharmacists can provide patients with the best care possible. Pharmacy technicians also play an important role in ensuring patients are equipped with the information they need to ensure correct dosage and safe, effective use of these agents. This activity will include a list of novel medications and vaccines approved in 2023 with information about each of their indications. In addition, the activity will further explore select medications to highlight important characteristics, such as mechanism of action, dosing, administration, safety, and efficacy. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians must stay abreast of the nuances in indications and potential role of new medications and vaccines so they can continue to optimize care for their patients.
