Use of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is well documented to be highly effective in preventing the transmission of HIV, and in recent years the US Preventive Services Task Force has recommended PrEP be available to all individuals at risk of acquiring HIV. However, despite updated recommendations and guidelines for selection of appropriate regimens, consistent PrEP adherence has been found to be suboptimal, with 50% of individuals discontinuing treatment within a year, and those at higher risk of HIV acquisition using PrEP less often. Managed care professionals and pharmacists are essential in supporting efforts to provide education, adherence counseling, and monitoring of individuals taking PrEP. Pharmacist-led efforts to improve access to PrEP are extremely important not just from a cost perspective but also in terms of improving the quality of life of people at risk of acquiring HIV through individualized medication regimens. This resource center includes a 3-part webinar series and a multidisciplinary panel discussion along with expert perspective interviews. Together, these activities will review challenges and disparities in HIV prevention, investigational PrEP agents, economic implications of HIV prevention with PrEP, and useful approaches for managed care pharmacists to support disease state management and formulary decisions. Upon completion of all activities within this resource center, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Completion demonstrating their dedication to removing barriers to PrEP uptake and access as well as improving the care for people who are candidates for HIV PrEP.
