Influenza Management: Reviewing the Safety and Efficacy of Therapy Options

Room: Cherry Blossom Ballroom

Saturday, March 21, 2020

Breakfast: 6:00 AM – 6:30 AM ET
Session: 6:30 AM – 8:00 AM ET

Description:
According to CDC estimates, approximately 35.5 million individuals were ill with influenza and 490,600 influenza-related hospitalizations occurred during the 2018-2019 influenza season. Certain patient populations are more vulnerable to developing influenza-related complications, which can contribute to the burden of the disease. Pharmacists play a vital role in identifying these at-risk patients and ensuring the appropriate use of recommended therapy options for influenza, including baloxavir, oseltamivir, peramivir, and zanamivir. This presentation will provide an overview of influenza as well as a review of the goals of treatment and each of the therapies used in the management of influenza.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring: The Evolution of Diabetes Care

Room: Cherry Blossom Ballroom

Saturday, March 21, 2020

Reception: 6:00 PM – 6:45 PM ET
Session: 6:45 PM – 8:15 PM ET

Description:
As the 7th leading cause of death in this country, diabetes continues to pose a significant burden. Many technological advancements in measuring glucose levels and available monitoring devices have assisted patients in monitoring levels and achieving normoglycemia. Real-time continuous glucose monitoring (rtCGM) provides a comprehensive picture of the glucose fluctuations across time and can be linked to life events such as meals or medication administration. It is critical that pharmacists and pharmacy technicians involved in the care of patients living with diabetes are able to identify those who may be good candidates for rtCGM and then educate these patients on the nuances of their device. Featured in this activity are patient counseling video vignettes, which will provide important educational points and follow a patient’s journey in learning more about CGM.

Migraine Prophylaxis and Treatment: Evolving Therapies and the Opportunity for Pharmacist Intervention

Room: Cherry Blossom Ballroom

Sunday, March 22, 2020

Breakfast: 6:00 AM – 6:30 AM ET
Session: 6:30 AM – 8:00 AM ET

Description:
Migraine is a neurological disease that may be associated with incapacitating symptoms. It is ranked as the third most prevalent illness in the world and affects an estimated 1 billion individuals worldwide. Multiple abortive and prophylactic therapies for migraine headaches are available; however, optimizing treatment can be difficult given the variation in presentation among patients and associated treatment challenges. Fortunately, there have been many advancements in this field in recent years. A focus on calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) as a target led to the approval of medications in new classes, including anti-CGRP monoclonal antibodies and CGRP receptor antagonists. The approval of a medication from a new class featuring selective serotonin (5-HT)1F receptor agonists expanded the treatment armamentarium further. In order to make appropriate interventions, it is essential that pharmacists have a clear understanding of the role of both traditional as well as recently available options to ensure patients are correctly assessed and managed.
